On Sunday, February 21st, ibrahim abdul-matin had the honor of speaking at the Schomburg Center in Harlem, NY commemorating the assassination of beloved activist and leader Malcolm X. The event, entitled, "Malcolm X and Islam Today," also featured prominent New Yorkers including Dr. Sapphire Ahmed, Imam Yusef Ramadan, and Sam Anderson. The event was organized by Women In Islam, Inc., an organization dedicated to human rights.
"I grew up listening to Malcolm X tapes," says ibrahim abdul-matin. "His family's off-the-grid lifestyle, how they grew their own vegetables, resonated with me as a young person in Brooklyn. African-Americans were, are, can, and will be healthy and self-sufficient, just like Malcolm inspired so many to be."
Dr. L'Heureux Lewis, Professor of Black Studies and Sociology at the City College of New York attended the event. "It was good to hear a variety of perspectives on Brother Malcolm's life. Ibrahim Abdul-Matin's connection between Malcolm's activism and environmentally conscious upbringing was an interesting addition to Malcolm's sphere of influence." Abdul-Matin's book, "Green Deen: What Islam Teaches About Protecting the Planet," is due in stores October, 2010.
