ibrahim accepts a Proclamation from Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President.
On August 17, 2010, ibrahim abdul-matin, author of "Green Deen: What Islam Teaches About Protecting the Planet," was honored by the Manhattan Borough President's Office during their annual Ramadan Iftar. Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President, referred to ibrahim as "a celebrated environmental activist" and "an example for people of all ages and faiths." The event and awards ceremony took place at the famed Malclom X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Community Center - the restored site of the Audubon Ballroom where Malcolm X was assassinated.
"I am overcome by this Proclamation from the Manhattan Borough President. To receive an award here, basically a holy site, where our Brother Al-Hajj Malik Shabazz lost his life, leaves me without words other than Praise God and blessed be those who serve humanity."
Sister Aisha Al-Adawiyya, Founder of Women in Islam, Inc. and lead organizer of the evening was happy to see ibrahim be acknowledged. "He's like a son to me and I am very proud. His work is unique, innovative, and sheds light on a part of Islam and Muslims - care for and love of the environment - that many don't know about or ignore."
Abdul-Matin's book, "Green Deen," is a collection of stories about Muslim Americans who dedicate their lives to protecting the planet. The book will be available everywhere books are sold in October, 2010.
